Formerly known as The Lake at Christenberry Farms, the venue recently became The Lake at Willow Oaks, but it remains one of East Tennessee’s family-owned wedding venues.

Best Photo Locations at The Lake at Willow Oaks

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings here is how many different really scenic backdrops you can create on this expansive property.

The Pond

The pond is probably the venue’s most underrated feature. You can’t see it from the road, so many guests don’t realize it’s there until they arrive. Every side of the pond offers a different backdrop, which means couples can create a surprising amount of variety in their portraits.

When the wind settles, the water becomes incredibly reflective and creates beautiful mirror-like images.

The Upper Field

The upper field behind the venue offers some of the best panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains. This is an especially great location for sunset portraits when the mountains begin to glow in the evening light.

The Willow Oak Trees

The namesake willow oaks provide beautiful texture and shade throughout the property. They work especially well for first looks, family photos, and portraits during brighter parts of the day.

The Best Time of Day for Photos

Golden hour is absolutely worth planning for here.

The combination of mountain views, open skies, and reflective water creates some of the most beautiful evening light you’ll find at an East Tennessee wedding venue.

If possible, build 20-30 minutes of sunset portrait time into your timeline.

Things to Know Before You Book

Rain Plan

The venue offers indoor ceremony options if weather becomes an issue, giving couples flexibility without needing to relocate guests.

Parking

Parking is located on high ground, which is a huge advantage during rainy weather. Guests can typically get in and out without worrying about weather.

Décor Inventory

Definitely ask Lissa about the décor options included with the venue. They have a collection of commonly requested reception items that can save couples both money and planning time.

Vendor Access

One small planning note: the front barn doors are a popular photo location earlier in the day, but they’re also where vendors often unload equipment.

A little coordination between vendors can help keep this area clean for portraits.

Preferred Vendors

The venue does not require couples to use preferred vendors, but they do maintain a recommended vendor list with professionals they trust and have worked with successfully.

What Receptions Feel Like Here

After sunset, the venue takes on a completely different atmosphere.

Because the property sits away from city lights, clear nights often reveal incredible views of the stars. Guests frequently gather around the fire pit area, creating a relaxed, and intimate atmosphere.

It’s one of those venues that encourages people to slow down, stay outside, and enjoy the setting.

From a Photographer’s Perspective

The thing I love most about The Lake at Willow Oaks is the light.

The property has wide-open spaces that create clean, flattering natural light throughout much of the day. Combined with the mountain views, pond reflections, and rolling landscape, it allows us to create environmental portraits that truly showcase where they got married.

One of my favorite moments here happened during a calm afternoon when the pond looked like glass. The mountains in the distance were glowing in soft sunlight, the venue was bathed in golden light, and everything felt like a postcard.

Another moment that perfectly captured the spirit of this venue’s involved owners Lissa and Sidney. As they helped bring a couple to the upper field for sunset portraits, Sidney stopped to greet the horses nearby, kissing each one on the nose as they leaned over the fence. It was a simple moment, but it perfectly reflected the warmth and family atmosphere that makes this place special.

My biggest photographer tip: for photographers visiting for the first time: don’t only stay next to the barn. Explore the property. The best images often happen when you’re willing to walk a little farther.
