If you’ve always dreamed of a romantic garden wedding but don’t want to leave Knoxville, Baxter Gardens is a pretty special place.
This private 55-acre property sits on a hill overlooking Knoxville, with secluded gardens, an estate home for getting ready, and views that stretch toward the Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, you may even spot the gold top of the Sunsphere in the distance.
It has the feeling of a private garden estate tucked away from the city, even though you’re still right in Knoxville.
For couples who love quiet luxury, beautiful gardens, and an outdoor celebration under a tent, Baxter Gardens offers something that’s hard to find elsewhere in the Knoxville area.
Why Couples love Baxter Gardens
Baxter Gardens feels especially suited to the romantics at heart, the couples who have always imagined their wedding surrounded by flowers, fountains, hedges, and beautiful outdoor spaces.
If you grew up loving the idea of a secret garden, this venue may feel particularly fitting.
The property is also much larger than you might expect. At 55 acres, there is plenty of room for the wedding day to unfold across different parts of the property rather than having everything happen in one space. And perhaps the biggest draw is the combination of privacy and location. You get secluded, manicured gardens and expansive views while remaining in Knoxville.
This probably isn’t the right venue for someone who wants a traditional hotel ballroom or doesn’t want to plan a tented reception. But if you’re excited by the idea of creating an elevated outdoor celebration, the tent is part of the charm.

One of the things that makes Baxter Gardens different from a typical garden venue is the sheer amount of space and privacy.
The Ellipse Gardens feature hedged walkways, fountains, sculptures, and areas of open shade, while the Balustrade provides a beautiful setting for cocktail hour surrounded by the four seasons’ statues: Primavera (Spring), Estate (Summer), Autunno (Autumn), and Inverno (Winter).

$8,000 Package
The $8,000 package includes:

- 4 hours of access the day before for setup

For weddings with 300+ guests, you’ll need to rent the appropriately sized tent and plan your layout around the number of guests.
You’ll also want to budget for additional rentals, including a tent and, for larger guest counts, luxury restroom facilities.
Planning a Tented Wedding at Baxter Gardens
The tent isn’t simply a backup plan at Baxter Gardens, it’s part of the experience.
Couples will need to rent a tent for their reception, and a large clear-span tent can create a beautiful, elevated space while still keeping the gardens and outdoor setting at the center of the celebration.
A clear-span tent from Chattanooga Tent is one option worth considering for both an elevated reception and a weather backup plan.
The rain plan is to add a tent in one of the gardens. Since you’re already planning on renting a reception tent, this can be incorporated into the overall design rather than feeling like a completely separate plan.
Best Photo Spots at Baxter Gardens
One of my favorite things about photographing Baxter Gardens is that the property gives you multiple distinct portrait locations.
You’re not limited to one garden or one backdrop. You can move through the property and create a gallery that feels varied while still maintaining the overall garden-estate aesthetic.
The Ellipse Gardens
This is one of my favorite areas for portraits. The hedged walkways, fountains, sculptures, and open shade give you lots of options, particularly earlier in the day when the shaded gardens can provide beautiful, softer light. It’s also a wonderful place to step away from the activity of the wedding for a few quiet portraits.
The Upper Balcony
The estate’s porch from the bridal suite provides a different visual feel from the gardens.
Behind the House
The area near the groom’s suite offers another more secluded portrait location.
The Smoky Mountain Views
And then there’s the view.
At golden hour, the hilltop location can become especially beautiful as the light hits the Smoky Mountains in the distance.
One of my favorite moments here happened during cocktail hour. Guests were mingling nearby while the sun cast golden light across the mountains. We stepped into a secluded garden and photographed to the sound of one of the fountains.
It was peaceful and festive at the same time.
The Best Time of Day for Baxter Gardens Wedding Photos
Golden hour is a favorite, especially if you want to take advantage of the mountain views. But don’t overlook the earlier parts of the day.
The shaded gardens can be incredibly useful for portraits before the sun gets lower, particularly around the hedges and other areas that provide open shade.
There is also an important ceremony-lighting consideration.
If you’re getting married on the front lawn, I wouldn’t schedule the ceremony too late in the day. As the house casts more shadow across the lawn, the foreground can become gray and shaded while the mountains behind you are still receiving bright sunlight. That creates a difficult exposure situation.
If you’re planning a later ceremony, I’d consider the Ellipse Garden instead.
This is a great example of why your ceremony location and ceremony time shouldn’t be planned independently of your photography timeline.
Getting Ready at Baxter Gardens
The estate gives you dedicated spaces for getting ready before the ceremony.
The bridal party typically gets ready in the upstairs room of the estate, which has a balcony overlooking the front lawn.
The groom’s party gets ready across the back patio above the garage.
Having the estate available for the morning gives your wedding day a sense of place from the very beginning. Rather than starting in a generic hotel room, your getting-ready photographs can immediately feel connected to the property.
Best Seasons to Get Married at Baxter Gardens
Every season has something different to offer here, but from a photographer’s perspective, I’d rank them differently.
Spring
Spring would be high on my list. The dogwoods and azaleas come into bloom, adding beautiful color and texture throughout the gardens. If you love a classic garden-wedding aesthetic, spring is hard to beat.
Summer
Summer brings rich green grass and plenty of leafy trees that create shade throughout the property. For couples who want that lush, green garden feeling, summer can be beautiful.
Fall
Fall brings another layer to the views as autumn color begins spreading across the mountains and gardens. If mountain views and changing foliage are part of your vision, fall could be an especially beautiful choice.
Winter
Winter would be my least recommended season from a photography perspective. With less foliage and more potential foot traffic impacting the gardens and lawns, it takes more careful planning to get the same garden-estate feeling. That doesn’t mean a winter wedding can’t work. With the right planning and design teams, it absolutely could, it just requires more intentionality.
Things to Know Before You Book Baxter Gardens
Keep vehicles out of the upper property.
This is one of my biggest photography tips. There are terraced parking lots farther down the hill, and I strongly recommend having guests park there rather than allowing vehicles to fill the area around the gardens and estate.
As a photographer, you don’t want to spend the day finding beautiful angles only to have vehicles appearing in the background. It’s a small logistical choice that can make a big difference in your photographs.
Consider guest shuttles.
If the ceremony is on the front lawn, guests can walk up the hill. If you’re holding the ceremony in one of the gardens, however, I’d strongly recommend designated shuttles, especially when considering guests with mobility concerns.
Plan vendor load-in carefully.
The property has a one-lane circular drive around the gardens. That means several vendors trying to load in at the same time can create a bottleneck. Your planner and vendor team should coordinate arrival times so caterers, rentals, florists, photographers, and other vendors aren’t all trying to use the drive simultaneously.
Remember that the tent is part of your budget.
The venue fee doesn’t mean the wedding itself is all-inclusive. You’ll need to account for your tent and other rentals, and larger weddings should plan for luxury restroom facilities as well.
From a Photographer’s Perspective
The thing I love most about Baxter Gardens is that the property gives you space to create a varied wedding gallery without ever losing the feeling of place.
The hilltop setting provides beautiful light and views, while the separate gardens give you opportunities to photograph intimate moments away from the main celebration.
And when the light is right, the mountains glowing in the distance, guests enjoying cocktail hour, a fountain running somewhere nearby — the property can feel almost surreal.
For another photographer shooting here for the first time, my biggest tip is simple: Park down the hill. I know it’s tempting to park up top, but you’ll appreciate having one less vehicle competing with the gardens in your backgrounds.
